What Happens During a Root Canal?

One of our dentists will begin by numbing your mouth with a local anesthetic to ensure you are comfortable throughout treatment. If necessary, we can also provide sedation dentistry. After securing a rubber dam in place to isolate the affected tooth, we will make a small opening in the crown. This will allow us to access the inner layers of the tooth, including the pulp chambers and root canals.

After removing the damaged or diseased tissues and the pulp, we will sterilize the area before filling it with a biocompatible solution known as gutta-percha. This unique compound takes the place of the pulp and helps maintain the tooth’s inner structure.

A tight seal will then be created to prevent reinfection before we place a temporary crown over the affected tooth. You will wear this crown while your permanent one is being created, which should only take 2-3 weeks.

Benefits of Root Canals

  • They can save you money in the long run. Extractions can be more expensive than root canals, and you may need to have a bridge or implant placed if you have a tooth extracted.
  • They can help you keep your natural teeth. Natural teeth are better for your overall health than artificial teeth. They help you chew properly, which can help you digest your food and absorb nutrients. They also help you speak clearly.
  • They can give you peace of mind. Knowing that your tooth is healthy and won’t cause you any more pain can be a huge relief.
