What Are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are thin sheaths, usually made of porcelain, that we attach to the outward-facing surfaces of the teeth. Their job is to hide imperfections and enhance the overall appearance of the patient’s smile. Because their size, shape, and color are all customized, they tend to look both natural and beautiful. They are also highly resistant to stains and have the potential to last for many years.

Veneers can be used to address a range of cosmetic issues, including:

  • Chips and cracks
  • Small gaps between teeth
  • Discoloration
  • Minor misalignment
  • Asymmetrical teeth
  • And more!

The Process of Getting Veneers

The treatment always begins with a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Mickle. During this time together, he will listen to your goals and expectations for your teeth. This appointment requires getting updated records such as X-rays, measurements, and photos. This additional information is vital for us to give proper recommendations that will eventually lead to a successful, long-lasting outcome.

Often, Dr. Mickle will recommend a Trial Smile. This is a revolutionary way to “try on” your new smile. We take molds of your existing teeth and pour them up in stone. We send these models to our master ceramist to fabricate an ideal smile designed in wax. We will bring you back to the office a week later to “try” your new smile with a hard plastic over your teeth. The trail smile is so helpful for those who don’t know what’s possible with porcelain veneers. This helps with the design of the teeth as many of the elements can be adjusted chairside with Dr. Mickle as you discuss what the ideal smile for you looks like.

Once you are ready to move forward with scheduling, you can expect the entire veneer process to take just two visits (spaced 3 – 4 weeks apart).

Benefits of Veneers

When comparing veneers to other forms of cosmetic dentistry, you will find that their benefits are superior in virtually every way. For instance:

  • Optimal beauty. Veneers are natural-looking and designed to mimic the lifelike aesthetic of regular tooth enamel. Onlookers may never be able to tell that you have them!
  • Resistance to discoloration. Veneers are stain-resistant because they are not porous like natural tooth enamel. Pigments tend to slide right off them!
  • Durability. Veneers can last 10 – 20 years as long as you commit to taking proper care of them. In some cases, they last even longer.
  • Versatility. Veneers can change the size, shape, and color of your teeth — components our team will consider when crafting your treatment plan. We can also adjust the number of veneers we provide to help you achieve your goals.
  • Improved quality of life. Veneers can boost your confidence and make it easier for you to thrive in social situations. In turn, you may find that your mental and physical well-being improve.

Understanding the Cost of Veneers

The cost of veneers depends on how many of them you receive, the extent of preparatory treatment, and other factors. Although they tend to cost more than other cosmetic treatments, their durability, longevity, and outstanding beauty make them a wise use of money. Plus, our practice has provisions that can make them more affordable. For example, we offer a FREE cosmetic consultation, and most patients qualify for low-interest financing.

Veneers FAQs

Are veneers permanent?

While the veneers themselves aren’t permanent, the preparation required to place them cannot be reversed. Because of this, you’ll need to always have them protected by dental veneers in Greenwood Village. However, they have extremely long lifespans of 20 or more years with good oral hygiene habits and maintenance, so it will likely be decades before you’ll need to worry about getting your veneers replaced!

Do veneers give you a lisp?

When you first get your dental veneers, they’ll make your teeth feel like different lengths or even widths, which could affect your ability to speak clearly for a week or so as you get used to them. In some cases, patients notice they develop a temporary lisp because their tongues aren’t used to the presence of the veneers. Keep in mind that this is only temporary, and you’ll be back to speaking like normal in no time!

How many veneers do I need?

The number of veneers you need will depend on how many teeth you want to enhance the appearance of. Because veneers are individually crafted, you can choose to rejuvenate the look of one, several, or all of your visible teeth. At your initial consultation, one of our skilled cosmetic dentists in Greenwood Village will help you determine how many veneers it will take to achieve your smile goals.

Can you whiten veneers?

Dental veneers are made from materials like porcelain, ceramic, and resin, which aren’t as porous as your natural tooth enamel. Because of this, they can’t be whitened with store-bought or professional teeth whitening products. If you want to brighten your smile, our team at Landmark Dental Studio recommends having it done before your veneers need to be replaced, allowing your restored teeth to be custom-shaded to match your newly brightened teeth.

How do veneers differ from crowns?

Veneers and dental crowns serve different purposes for patients. Crowns offer support, strength, and protection for compromised teeth, like those that have large dental fillings or have received root canal treatment, while veneers primarily offer aesthetic benefits. Unlike crowns, which are designed to fit over the top visible surface of teeth to seal them off completely, veneers are only designed to fit over the front surface of teeth to conceal cosmetic flaws.

Do veneers feel like real teeth?

Your dental veneers will be custom-crafted by an expert dental laboratory of our choosing to ensure they look and feel completely natural. They’ll also be crafted from materials that mimic the natural appearance of tooth enamel by reflecting light, like porcelain. While they may feel odd at first, you’ll quickly get used to them. You’ll also be able to continue brushing, flossing, eating, and speaking like usual.
